On the Achiever’s Mindset

Many of us are used to taking success for granted and instead focusing our attention on, and highlighting, our failures. The type of personal success that stands out could be saving someone’s life or getting a Nobel Prize. But life is mostly made up of routine situations and small deeds that are nonetheless significant. “Our neurolinguistic programming teaches us to work with our mind to achieve success and develop positive thinking,” says Marta Ventrubová, a coach and Be Bold partner who has helped salespeople achieve to 30% better sales results by using this method. 

Each year people make New Year’s resolutions but only a few fulfill them. Why? 

The problem is that people are not motivated enough, and they set too ambitious goals. To reach them they would need to make big changes in their lives, which can feel uncomfortable. We, as people, often want change and results as quickly as possible and if we don’t attain them, we give up. But we need to realize that creating new habits takes time. 

Then what should we do to reach our goals?

We need to be more patient and willing to progress in small steps. Children also don’t start walking straightaway. Even though they fall and it hurts, they try and try and eventually they make it. It’s important to trust yourself, count on the fact that every effort to change something will take some time and not get stressed about failures. Besides, we shouldn’t perceive mistakes and wrong steps negatively, but we should analyze and learn from them. By overcoming barriers, we appreciate progress more. 

Is it enough to trust yourself and persist in the effort or do we need to do something else?

The most important thing that we can influence in our lives is the content of our mind. Good and bad things happen to all of us. What makes us distinct is how we respond to them. Our perception of the world is primarily influenced by our family and surroundings. If your parents gave you a positive view of the world, you certainly have an advantage. The good news is that even people who inherited a different worldview can still seize the opportunity and change it. 

Does neurolinguistic programming help in this regard?

Yes, neurolinguistic programming (NLP) continually helps to strengthen and develop one’s own potential. It derives from models of successful communication, behavior, skills, and attitudes. It’s based on work with our own beliefs and values and on changing the certain patterns of behavior and thinking we all have. Some of these patterns help us while others can even harm us. The NLP method enables people to work on themselves, put these patterns under a magnifying glass and change what isn’t good anymore. 

How do you use this method when working with clients? 

I will give you a concrete example. A client wants to prepare a new project well and get rid of  the fear of failure. Together we define the goal of the project. With the help of specific questions, we find out what is impeding the client from achieving their goal and then we find ways to overcome these barriers. We examine the reasons for fear and eliminate them by techniques on increasing self-confidence, by creating new patterns of behavior or by getting rid of old beliefs about oneself that impede progress. At the end of the consultation, I do a visualization of future successful leadership of the project and help the client anchor a feeling of success. 

Why do you think this method is better than others?

If a person wants to change something in their life, is dedicated to working hard on it and has an open mind, neurolinguistic programming is an effective and quick way to achieve change. Another advantage is that if the clients don’t feel like talking about concrete details, they don’t have to, and we can still get very good results. This is good in delicate situations that clients don’t want to speak about. Men especially appreciate it because they dislike confiding in others. 

Is it possible to work with clients who don’t mention concrete examples and situations? 

It is; after years of experience I can just read their body language and listen carefully to the words they use, based on which I can evaluate what technique will best suit them. A client can say that they got into a bad work situation. They’ll say they can still see the situation clearly in their eyes, that they feel terrible and want to learn from it so it never happens again. For me, details about where it happened, who was there and at what occasion it happened are not important. It’s the clients’ words and gestures that count. According to these, I can recognize what type of client I’m dealing with and then choose an appropriate technique. In this specific case of the client mentioned, I’d work with visualization of the situation and their emotions. 

The neurolinguistic method is mainly used for individual consultations. What use does it have in the business world? 

It can be used in any environment. In my workshops, I help salespeople replace the old and nonfunctional patters of behavior and thinking that slow down their progress with new ones. If they had worse results last year, their self-confidence might decrease. The NLP method teaches them to trust themselves more, to work with goals and develop communication skills so customers and colleagues understand and receive their information better. I also help salespeople work better with their emotions and use the potential of their subconscious mind. Being calm, equilibrated and satisfied with oneself is fundamental. 

I also teach them how our mind works, what perception patterns are and what they need to take into account when dealing with other people. I explain to them why other people can perceive what they say and do in a completely different way than they think as well as what they can do to be on the same page with other people. The NLP method is about modelling perfection, which means that if one wants to get better at a certain skill, they need to find someone who is perfect at it, analyze what factors make them perfect at it, and then train the skill in their own life to introduce a new pattern of behavior.

What results do people achieve after your workshops? 

After the workshop, salespeople have a better understanding of their clients and clients’ needs and are better at communicating with them. Overall communication with their colleagues improves, too. People are also more motivated when their mind is set on achieving success and when they can handle their emotions. Results are individual but to give you some example, one client has recently reported a 30% improvement of business results.

In personal and work life, it’s important to be self-confident and have a positive approach, as well as an achiever’s mindset. How can you attain this in daily life, which is full of stressful situations? 

It’s important to remind yourself every day that you achieved something and come back to these situations when you doubt yourself. The main source of self-confidence is in us. It’s not only what our surroundings say about us; it’s in how we think of ourselves. Try to understand how you speak to yourself and in case you have doubts, try to be nicer and more tolerant towards yourself. When we manage to accept ourselves with all our imperfections and fears we can become more self-confident and satisfied with ourselves. That’s a significant building block for a peaceful and happy life.
